How it works
Quick steps
- Open Short Film and sign in.
- Write your premise in two to four sentences.
- Select a style.
- Add references for characters or places, if you have them.
- Check the credit cost, then generate.
- Review the script and storyboard steps, if the app lets you, before the final film.
- Download and finish with sound and titles.
Writing a strong premise
A premise that works for a short film has four parts (our formula):
- One clear story: short films work best with one main character and one change.
- Show, don’t explain: describe what we see, not backstory.
- Give an ending: the app needs to know where the story lands.

Heartwarming
An elderly lighthouse keeper finds a stray puppy after a storm. At first he tries to send it away, but by the end of winter they watch the sunrise together from the top of the lighthouse.
Sci-fi twist
A delivery drone in a crowded future city starts leaving small gifts for a lonely girl in a high-rise apartment. The final shot reveals who is really controlling it.
Comedy
A cat decides the family’s new robot vacuum is its mortal enemy and plans an elaborate ambush, which goes hilariously wrong.
Brand story
A young baker opens her first tiny shop at dawn. We follow her hands, the flour, the first customer, and end on the shop sign: [BRAND NAME].
Mystery
A night-shift museum guard notices that one painting changes slightly every night. On the final night, the figure in the painting is looking straight at him.
Adding references
Pika says references “establish your overall vision.” Good options:
- Main character: a sheet from Character Studio.
- Location: one wide image of the main setting.
- Product (for brand films): a clean image from Product Shot.
- Mood: an image with the lighting and colour you want.

Review checklist
- Does the story make sense without explanation?
- Does the main character look the same in every shot?
- Are there any warped faces, hands or objects? See reduce distortion.
- Does the ending land clearly?
- Is any on-screen text garbled? Replace it with titles in an editor.
Finishing your film
- Sound: Pika Soundtrack scores “any clip to picture—music, ambience and foley matched to the action.”
- Narration: video voiceovers.
- Lighting and look: Relight Media and Color Grade.
- Extra angles: Camera Director.
- Longer shots: Extend Video.
