Instagram Reels specs to design for
Set these up before you generate anything. Making a clip vertical from the start is far better than cropping a widescreen clip later.

In Pika, choose a vertical aspect ratio in Video Studio when the model offers it. Generate at the base resolution to draft, then upscale the keeper so it looks sharp at full screen.
Keep key details in the safe zone
Instagram lays its own interface over your Reel: the username at the top, the caption and audio label at the bottom, and like, comment and share buttons down the right. Anything important under those will be hidden.
- Top: leave roughly the top 14–15% clear.
- Bottom: leave a larger band clear; guides suggest anywhere from 10% to about a third of the height, more on the right.
- Right edge: keep text and faces away from the buttons.
- Grid: the 3:4 profile preview trims the top and bottom, so keep the subject centred.
In prompts, ask for the subject “centred in a vertical frame, with space above and below.”
The Reels workflow in Pika
- Plan the Reel: pick a format from the list below, write the hook and sketch three to five short shots.
- Open Video Studio, choose a vertical aspect ratio, and attach any character or product references.
- Generate the hook shot first. If it doesn’t grab attention, the rest doesn’t matter.
- Generate the remaining shots with the same references and style words.
- Polish: extend shots that end too soon, grade them to one look, and upscale.
- Add sound: Pika Soundtrack, a voiceover, or audio added in Instagram.
- Edit and post: assemble in Instagram’s editor or your own, add text and captions, choose a cover, and post.
Pika’s credit costs depend on the model and settings; Pika’s pricing page lists a 720p, 5-second clip at 33 credits on Wan 3.0 and 122 on Seedance 2.5. A five-shot Reel on Wan 3.0 would be around 165 credits before retries. See Pika pricing.

People decide whether to keep watching almost immediately. Make the opening frame do the work:
Start mid-action
Skip the build-up. Open on the splash, the reveal or the transformation already happening.
Show something unexpected
An impossible scale, a surreal material, a familiar object doing something new.
One subject, big in frame
On a small screen, detail is lost. Fill the frame with the thing that matters.
Pair it with a text hook
Add a short line on screen in the editor, inside the safe zone. Don’t ask Pika to render text.

Prompt templates for vertical Reels
These are our own templates. Replace the bracketed parts and keep the framing line.
Hook shot
Vertical 9:16 frame. [Subject] centred, large in frame, [surprising action already happening]. [Light]. Fast, punchy energy, camera pushes in. Space above and below the subject. No text.
Product moment
Vertical frame. @product centred on [surface], [light] sweeping across it. Slow orbit. Keep the label and colour exactly as in the reference. Clean background, no text.
Seamless loop
Vertical frame. [Subject] in a continuous, repeating motion: [e.g. waves rolling, a wheel turning, smoke curling]. Camera static. The motion should look the same at the start and end.

- Label AI-generated content where Instagram requires or offers it.
- You have rights to any music, people and brands shown.
- Business accounts may have a more limited music library; check in the app.
